Reflections of a Super Senior

Issue date: 5/20/09 Section: Opinion
Ah, the end of the year. Some students are kicking things off for the rest of their lives. In other words they are graduating. Yes, break out the streamers, slip on your cap and gown, and bask in the accolades of no longer being a college student for the rest of your lives.
That is, unless you happen to fall into my bracket. We go by many names - slackers, Super Seniors, Eternal Students, Double Majors, amongst others. Yes, next year will be my sixth year going to California State University, Stanislaus. Is the prospect of having to stick around past the 4-year time frame many students seem to follow bothering me much? Not really. Now while I would like to have been able to graduate this year alongside some of my co-workers here in the Signal, this year I'm going to roll with what's been dealt to me.
Many things could prevent someone from graduating on time. Forces of nature, family troubles, or a crazy ex has drained your bank accounts and is kicking it up in Fiji with a cabana boy. But just because you're unable to walk across that stage and snag your diploma this year doesn't really mean that it's the end of the world as you know it. Sometimes not being able to do something is a blessing in disguise. Perhaps that one opportunity that you missed this year, like an internship at a place you really want to try out, will open up next year. Thus you snag a lot of experience needed for your future field of employment and you get a lot of interesting stories to tell.
If you're all set on the internship front then you can try to get involved in some groups on campus that you never had the chance to join before.
So to recap, hitting a snag isn't something to be worried about. Lost possibilities? Please, be ready to have your eyes opened to the untapped possibilities.
