Star Trek is not your typical Trekkie film. On opening night, May 8, the film grossed 4 million and it is still rated as the number one film to see by yahoo.com film critics. The film was directed by J. J. Abrams and written by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The film introduces many new actors, but all of the characters are based on the original Star Trek franchise.

The plot follows James T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine, and Spock, played by Zachary Quinto. The two boys are cadets at the Star Fleet Academy and while they start out as rivals, they eventually build a solid friendship and sense of respect. The two overcome odds aboard the USS Enterprise combating Nero, played by Eric Bana, a Romulan from the future who threatened the United Federation of Planets.

If science fiction movies are not your thing, do not let it stop you from going to see this film. While the film is set in an alternate universe it still holds a lot of realistic sub-plots that capture the entire audience's attention. For example Kirk, who's father died fighting Romulans when Kirk's mother was giving birth to him, is not only trying to save the universe, but he is a rebel who is lost and trying to find his way in the world. And, the oh-so-easy on the eyes Pine does it with charisma and a charming sarcasm that keeps viewers attentive.

This above all was the most surprising aspect of the film; it was actually funny. Largely due to the fact that the characters are still in the academy when they have to go and fight Romulans, they interact like a bunch of hormone crazed teenagers who are all trying to be top dog on campus. Spock and Kirk also fight for the attention of Nyota Uhura, played by Zoe Saldana, who is also a cadet at the academy. The film incorporated as much humor as possible by basing it on the conflicts that every normal teenager has. Viewers can definitely identify with the characters' everyday life struggles.

Overall this film is something that everyone should go out and see, before it is taken out of theaters. The special effects are extremely well done and composed in a media that makes the alternate universe not seem so alternate. It is a film that everyone can enjoy. It has action, romance, comedy and drama; it is by far the best film that has been released in years.
