The campus organization, A Day of Hope conducted a fundraiser on Wednesday in the Carol Burke Student Lounge from 3-4:30 in order to raise money to make Thanksgiving baskets to give out to needy families that normally would not have a Thanksgiving.

A Day of Hope is a non-profit organization on campus that was started 3 three years ago by Christopher Scott. Its purpose is to "reach out to the community and give something back," explains Brittany Scott, a first year member of the organization.
A Day of Hope fundraises all throughout the year in order to put on this one big event every year around Thanksgiving.
The organization gets lists from churches of families that are in need of help in the Turlock area. They distribute the Thanksgiving baskets a few days before Thanksgiving.
Baskets include a turkey and canned goods. Each basket is enough to provide one large meal for four people, says Sarah Moore, who has been the president of the organization for two years now.

Moore says that last year they started fundraising in the fall, but this year they started fundraising earlier in spring to keep awareness up.
They hope to exceed last year's goal by giving out 250 baskets this year. At publishing time they have raised enough to make 150 baskets.

Scott says that the way they get the most of the canned food is from the neighborhood around campus.
A few weeks before Thanksgiving the organization leaves empty bags and a note explaining the project on the doorsteps of neighboring houses.
The next day the organization members pick up bags filled with donnations of canned food and other non-perishable items. Moore said that this is an important event, and they are in need of more volunteers. The event takes place on November 15th and 16th.
