Immigration is the ever-growing and continuing topic of politics today. The government has come up with several tactics as to how to keep our sharing border with Mexico more safe.
There has been talk about building higher fences, expand the amount of border patrol and of course the ever famous minute-men, who are civilians that chase down illegal immigrants that enter this country.

Today, I came upon an article that stated that the city of Yuma, Arizona, is seeking to construct a moat to secure the Mexico border. Yes, this city is going back to the days where castles used moats to protect themselves from invaders. The idea of a moat being built along the border reminded me of a joke that Hispanic comedian George Lopez said on his "America's Mexican" tour.

Lopez said, "The government is building higher fences and constructing rivers with alligators in them to keep immigrants out, but let me tell you something. That still won't keep us out because we'll swim that river and make belts and shoes out of them alligators and sell them for a profit!" Hilarious!

How is a moat going to keep immigrants out? It's going to be just like crossing the Rio Bravo, also known as the Rio Grande in the U.S. The city of Yuma plans to dig out a "security channel" and fill it with water, which runs from the Rocky Mountains through the Grand Canyon, stretching about 23 miles. The "security channel" will be up to 10 feet deep and about 60 feet wide.

City officials say that not only will this provide security for the border, but it will also bring wildlife back to the region, which was once a thriving wet-land.

Now, I'm not an expert when it comes to immigration but in some ways I do think this idea is a bit far-fetched. No matter what government officials do, immigrants will never just completely stop coming to this country. I've said it before and I will say it again.

I've seen so many specials on television shows that discuss the topica of illegal immigrants. Securing border patrol doesn't anger me so much, but the fact that people such as the so-called "minute men" are armed with weapons, ready to use any type of violence against illegal immigrants angers me.

What other ideas will the government come up with? I have family who still immigrate here illegally and come here to honestly just work and provide a better lifestyle for their families.

It is gut-wrenching to not know if my uncle crossed the border safely or if the person crossing them, also known as the "coyote" or "pollero", have abandoned them, leaving them in the desert to wander endlessly until they confront minute-men and the border patrol.

Let's see exactly how this moat idea will work out because like what George Lopez said, "We are Mexi-cans!, you can't keep us out!" In so many ways, the man is right!

Remember, I'm not an immigration expert, so if you want to disagree with me, feel free to voice your opinion as I do mine on our website.
