Agricultural studies, biology, and business students won't want to miss an upcoming lecture by UC Berkley's Dr. Miguel Altieri.

In this free public lecture Altieri will be addressing the challenges and opportunities for a sustainable agriculture in the twenty first century.

As a member of UC Berkley's Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management, Altieri studies the links between agriculture and ecology in order to help people sustain their crops in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way.

"You're not just taking care of what you're growing. You're looking after the land and looking after the people as well," said Agricultural studies administrative support coordinator Wendy Olmstead.

Altieri does work in Latin America "helping resource poor farmers to achieve year-round food self-sufficiency, reduce their reliance on chemical inputs and develop agroecosystems that rebuild the production capacities of their small land holdings," according to Altieri's website. Posters around campus boast that "Dr. Altieri's research uses the concepts of agroecology to study, design and manage sustainable agroecosystems that are both productive and natural resource conserving, and that are also culturally sensitive, socially-just and economically viable."

Although agriculture is the economic backbone of the central valley, the agricultural studies department at CSU Stanislaus is relatively new on campus. Just five years ago there were only five students declaring their major as Agricultural studies, today that number has grown to 66 students.

This lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Faculty Development Center, Room 118. This lecture is part of the Agricultural Studies speaker series presented by Yosemite Farm Credit.
